Lately it seems as if there are many companies offering extended warranties on your vehicle. This is much different than when the selling dealer offers one at time of purchase. These are companies trying to get you to buy one just as your factory warranty is about to expire. However, they are not tailored to your car, and may not cover anything. As you know, I work for Dreyer and Reinbold Infiniti in Indianapolis, Indiana. I drive a 2009 Infiniti G37x coupe that currently has 22,000 miles on it. I received a notice in the mail last week telling me to hurry and buy a warranty because my factory warranty is about to expire. The only problem is that my Infiniti has a four year, 60,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty. I’m not close to being out of warranty by years or miles. So if you’re considering an extended warranty either at time of purchase or a few years after purchasing, ask yourself these questions:

Who is selling this warranty?
Will the dealer that services my car honor this warranty?
Exactly what systems are covered?
What is the deductible?
What is the warranty period on my vehicle, and what does it cover?

The best policy is to consult a dealer that sells your make of vehicle. Ask if they’ll honor the warranty. Better yet, ask them what warranty options THEY offer. Even if it’s a little more than the warranty offer that showed up in your mailbox, it will be well worth it. The last thing you want to do is spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on a warranty only to be told by a dealer that it doesn’t cover your problem, or it’s not honored at all. Should Your Dealership Experience Be Only About Price?

Everyday, I hear the phrase “I want your best price”. Most of the time, this translates into “I want you to be the cheapest dealer on this new or used Infiniti”. But if the buyer looks further and at the total package, often times the “best” price isn’t the lowest price. Let me explain.

At Dreyer & Reinbold Infiniti in Indianapolis, Indiana, we are never the cheapest or lowest price on a new or pre-owned car, crossover, or SUV. But we are ALWAYS the best value. We recondition every used car to the point where the new owner will have to spend nothing after buying it. Each car receives what it needs. Tires, brakes, belts, hoses, fluids, and cosmetic repairs are performed before the car is offered for sale. I can’t tell you how many times a prospective buyer will travel out of town to save a few thousand dollars only to end up in our service department within a week or two replacing worn tires, brakes, or sometimes worse. So that few thousand dollars they thought they were saving is being spent anyway, out of pocket on the spot. We also provide excellent service after the sale. Let me share a personal story that happened just the other day. I have a client who has purchased two cars from me in the last few years. He purchased a pre-owned car for his son about two years ago. Now the car needs tires. His son is located in northern Indiana, so they were pricing the tires at the local Infiniti dealer. Because of our relationship, he still asked my opinion about what had been recommended by the dealer. I’m glad he did check with me. The local Infiniti dealer quoted a GREAT price. But the problem is they quoted the wonderful low, cheap price on tires that are not recommended for his son’s EX35. They were the wrong weight and speed rating. But they sure would have saved him some money. So in this case, would it have been worth his son’s safety for my client to go the cheapest route?

This is the mindset of so many dealers out there. Use cheap, off-brand parts, or don’t replace them at all. All in the name of being the lowest price. So make sure when you’re shopping for a new or used luxury car to ask a lot of questions. And keep this simple phrase in mind: You get what you pay for”.
